The Sheriff's Dogs

"A good dog with a night duty man is as sound a proposition as you can get. The dog hears what the constable does not, gives him notice of anyone in the vicinity, guards his master's bicycle to the death, and remains mute unless roused. He is easily trained and will go home when told to do so with a message in his collar".   Colonel Hoel Llewellyn, Chief Constable of Wiltshire (1938)

Deputy Chris Donovan and Aska ready to work!

Canines have been recognized as a valuable tool in law enforcement since the 1800's.  Many law enforcement agencies have canine units.  These units are most commonly used for suspect apprehension and narcotics detection.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office has two work ready, certified canines . Nix and Kora are trained for specific duties. Both dogs will continue to receive advanced training throughout their careers.

Aska joined the Putnam County Sheriff's Office in 2011 and retired in November 2018. She is a German Shepherd. The German Shepherd is noted for its strength, intelligence, and abilities in obedience training. Deputy Donovan was Aska's handler, and she specialized in narcotics detection and tracking. During her career she had over thirty successful tracks, two of which were over a mile for felony suspects. She also found well hidden drugs. She was the 1st place dog in the 2014 South Ga K-9 Seminar, where she competed against more than 100 dog teams. She now lives a good life with her family.

Nix is a Belgian Malinois imported from Holland. He is a dual purpose K-9 trained in drug detection, tracking, and criminal apprehension. She joined our department in November 2018 and her handler is Deputy Donovan. With their striking intelligence, strong work ethic, and athletic frame, Malinois are highly sought after in law enforcement and the military. They are capable of learning many tasks. Nix and Deputy Donovon went through an advanced 8 week course and Nix received a certification from the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association.

Our German Shepherd, Kora works with her handler Deputy Hollie Collins. German Shepherds make great law enforcement dogs because they are quick to bond with their handler, extremely obedient, and have been bred to benefit from calm nerves which means they excel in high risk and tense situations. K-9 Kora is trained to detect explosives and also for tracking. She was donated to the Putnam County Sheriff's office by Deputy Alex Rickey in 2017. Deputy Collins and K-9 Kora went through a 4 week handler course and received a certificate from NNDDA.
