 Marine Patrol

Putnam County is unique in that it has more shoreline than any county in the state with the exception of the coastal counties. Georgia Power Lakes Sinclair and Oconee make up most of the northern, eastern, and southern borders of the county.

The Sheriff's Office shares a large marine/boathouse patrol station located on Lake Sinclair in Putnam County with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office also has a fixed structure boathouse on Lake Oconee.

The Sheriff's Office operates patrol boats on both lakes predominately during the summer season. However,  vessels are permanently stationed at each boathouse. Deputies work the water in the same manner they do the roadways, enforcing all boating safety laws and responding to calls for service.

The sheriff's patrol vessels are Sailfish center consoles powered by Yamaha four stroke outboards and were manufactured by Seminole Marine, Inc. of Cairo, Georgia. They are fully equipped with sirens, emergency lighting, radios, and rescue/first aid equipment. The Sheriff's Office also retains a rapidly deployable small aluminum boat for use in rivers, creeks and ponds.

All of our patrol boats, their engines and equipment were obtained by Sheriff Sills at no cost to the taxpayer utilitzing assets seized from criminals.  The entire Lake Oconee Marine Patrol Station was constructed and equipped using seized funds and Putnam County's portion of the Lake Sinclair station was paid for with seized monies, also.
