Winter Storm Situation

Message from the Sheriff  - Thursday, February 13, 2014 – 2:00PM

It appears the winter storm has ended at this time.  Most all state highways and primary county roads are navigable, but there are a great many spots of ice still on the routes.  You should still lower your speed and use caution driving in such locations.  Most secondary county and city streets are  in conditions that will allow you to travel at low speeds, but there are still some roads in remote places that are quite dangerous.  The ice is rapidly melting at this time and travel should be completely back to normal by tomorrow afternoon.

The current forecast calls for sun this afternoon and high of 45. Tomorrow’s high is expected to be 52 and the weather will continue to warm over the weekend, so it’s all over until next time.

The biggest problems we have at this juncture are power outages.  A significant portion of the county’s population still remains without power.  This is especially true in the southern areas of Putnam County.  Some homes have been without power for well over 24 hours.  I have opened the Poole Recreation Center (140 Recreation Road, Eatonton, GA  31024) which is located behind the Sheriff’s Office, as a warming station for people who are without power, heat, etc.

I stress that this is not a homeless shelter, but an emergency place for people who are cold and don’t have anywhere else to go at this time.  Deputy Sheriffs will be stationed at the recreation center at all times while it is open to assist you.

Both Tri-County EMC and Georgia Power are working diligently under extreme conditions to restore your power but there are hundreds, upon hundreds of locations where power lines are down all over Putnam, Baldwin, and Jones Counties.  There are over 100 workers and 40 trucks from the Mississippi Power Company in our area and they are working almost around the clock with our local utility personnel to get your power back on.

As I said yesterday, people shouldn’t go anywhere near a downed power line.  Ice and water conduct electricity and being in the vicinity of a downed power line can be life threatening.  You must continue to report downed lines and power outages to your respective provider.

All Putnam County and Gatewood Schools will be closed until Tuesday, February 18, 2014.

County and City offices will reopen for business tomorrow.

Be safe out there.  It’s almost over!
