Winter Storm Situation

As everyone is probably already aware, Putnam County is under a Winter Storm Warning at the present and that warning continues until Thursday.  All emergency service entities and public works departments met and discussed our plans here at the Sheriff’s Office this afternoon.

The current forecast for our county from the National Weather Service call for accumulations of ¼ to 1 inch of ice and up to 1 ½ inches of snow.  The freezing rain is predicted to start tonight around midnight and continue through most of Wednesday.

An ice storm of such nature will also result in widespread power outages and hundreds of trees will fall across roadways.  People shouldn’t go anywhere near a downed power line.  Ice and water conduct electricity and being in the vicinity of a downed power can be life threatening.  Should you encounter such a hazard, call and report it immediately.

An accumulation of 1 inch of ice will make roadways unsafe and virtually impossible to travel on for almost all vehicles.  People should simply not travel during such conditions unless it is absolutely necessary.  There is a probability that the state Depts. Of Public Safety and Transportation will activate a plan which will divert a significant number of 18 wheeler trucks off Interstate highways and route them through our county to prevent them from traveling in through or near the Metro-Atlanta area.  This may well contribute to traffic hazards in our community.

All Putnam County and City of Eatonton offices will be closed Wednesday, February 12th and Thursday, February 13th.  The Eatonton Putnam Water-Sewer Authority offices will be closed and all sessions of all Putnam County Courts have also been cancelled for these dates.

All Putnam County Schools will be closed on February 12th, 13th, & 14th.

Gatewood Schools will be closed on Wednesday, February 12th and will make an announcement as to whether they will closed beyond that date tomorrow.

I urge you all to enjoy the snow if you can, but please be careful and exercise caution as we get through this hopefully brief period of discomfort.

Your Sheriff’s Office stands ready to protect you and has done so for 207 years.  It is the “Emergency Operations Center” for your community and it is never activated because it never closes.
